Avila Beach to Pismo by bike: ocean views the whole way

Pismo Beach and Avila Beach are neighbors on the Central Coast, and the ride between them is one of the best ways to spend a morning around here. Our favorite way to do it starts right at our front door in Avila: warm up on the Bob Jones Trail, then follow the frontage roads down the coast to Shell Beach and Pismo with the Pacific keeping you company. Figure about 2-3 hours round trip at vacation pace, with stops.

The ride: Avila to Pismo (the scenic one)

Start at our shop — the Bob Jones Trail is directly across the street. Ride the trail up the creek to its Ontario Road end, then follow Avila Beach Drive under the highway to the roundabout and pick up Shell Beach Road, the frontage road with the ocean views. It carries you south past the clifftop parks of Shell Beach and Dinosaur Caves Park (yes, that's its real name), then becomes Price Street and rolls you right into downtown Pismo, pier and all. Roughly 7 miles each way, with rolling hills that feel a lot smaller on an e-bike. Most of it rides in bike lanes, but it is a road route — you'll be near traffic, so it's the better pick for riders comfortable with that.

Feeling adventurous on the way back? Cave Landing Road, off Avila Beach Drive, climbs to a dirt parking area above Pirate's Cove and a big clifftop view. Lock the bike at the top — the final walk down is on steep, unimproved trails. And a friendly local heads-up: Pirate's Cove is clothing-optional, so it may not be the family photo stop you were picturing.

The family alternative: just ride the Bob Jones Trail

If riding near traffic isn't your group's idea of a vacation, stick to the car-free part: the Bob Jones Trail is roughly 2.5 miles of paved, completely car-free path along San Luis Obispo Creek, and it starts right across the street from our shop. Mostly flat and very manageable for kids. We wrote a full guide — read our Bob Jones Trail page.

Why riders start in Avila (a completely unbiased opinion)

Starting in Avila means you begin and end at the beach — pier, promenade, tacos, ice cream, all within a block. It also means you can rent from us instead of hauling bikes on your car. The roughly 14-mile round trip to Pismo and back sits comfortably inside our e-bikes' 20-40 mile range — just know that hills, wind, assist level, and rider weight all affect battery use, so we'll top you off and talk through the route before you go.

E-bikes are $30/hour (or $90 for the day), scooters $25/hour, and every rental comes with a helmet, lock, phone holder, basket, and a ride map marked with our favorite routes — including this one. Open daily 10-5 at 472 Front Street, Avila Beach.
